The Legal Assistant position is in the Office of the Chief Administrative Law Judge located in the Review Commission's National Office in Washington, D.C. The Legal Assistant supervisor is the Chief Administrative Law Judge (ALJ). The Legal Assistant performs a range of administrative and legal assistant duties for the Chief ALJ, other ALJ's as well as all attorney-advisors.Learn more about this agency
- Assists ALJs with preparation of legal documents such as memoranda, decisions, affidavits, declarations, court exhibits, and related materials as required;
- Ensures that all legal documents produced conform to proper legal and formatting requirements;
- Prepares case files for assignment by the Chief ALJ, and closes out case files including settlement case files and exhibits concerning assigned legal matters;
- Oversees the timely transfer of cases to the Regional Offices;
- Prepares and distributes orders regarding pretrial notifications, simplified proceedings, trial locations and orders to show cause;
- Contacts regional offices, the Department of Labor Counsel, representatives and counsel of respondents to obtain information pertaining to case files such as discovery, settlement agreements, pretrial statements, etc.
- Responds to pro se employer issues that require interpretation of office policies and procedures;
- Utilizes a computerized case tracking system and other methods to obtain necessary case handling data;
- Manages response due date docket for pleadings;
- Analyzes and drafts legal documents, motions, briefs, pleadings and correspondence;
- Reads, understands, and interprets applicable Federal codes, laws and statues, and regulations.
