Anticipated entry on duty: April, 2019
The Squad Boss is responsible for assuring that the work assignments of the crew are carried out by performing a range of duties such as: Distributing and balancing the workload among eight crew members in accordance with established work flow or job specialization, assuring timely accomplishment of the assigned workload, and assuring that each crew member has enough work to keep busy. Keeping the Operations Captain informed on work progress, safety, equipment needs, etc. Preparing work schedules and coordinating and adjusting work priorities. Instructing crew members in specific tasks and job techniques and making available written instructions, reference materials, and supplies. Assigning work based on the difficulty and requirements of the assignments and the training, capabilities, and certifications of crew members. Giving on-the-job training in accordance with established procedures and practices. Maintaining a current knowledge and answering questions of other crew members on procedures, policies, directives, etc., and obtaining needed information or decisions from the Operations Captain on problems that come up. Checking on work in progress or spot checking work not requiring review and reviewing completed work to see that the Operations Captains instruction on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met. Amending or rejecting work not meeting established standards, referring to the Operations Captain questions or matters not covered by standards and problems in meeting performance standards. Informing crew members of available services and employee activities. Resolving simple informal complaints of crew members and referring others to the Operations Captain. Reporting to the Operations Captain on performance, progress and training needs of crew members, and on disciplinary problems. Making information suggestions to the Operations Captain as requested concerning promotions, reassignment, recognition of outstanding performance, and personnel needs.
Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

- The Work Capacity Test (WCT-Pack Test) as a method for assessing an employee's fitness levels for fire qualifications in the positions covered by this recruitment notice. Employees required to pass a WCT-Pack Test as a "condition of employment" will be provided one opportunity to pass the required test with a second chance provided at the discretion of management based on the results of the first test. This recruitment notice constitutes the required 30 days advanced notice for testing requirements. NOTE: Arduous fitness test will consist of completing a three-mile hike, within 45 minutes, while carrying a 45 pound pack. A time of 45 minutes, the passing score for the test, approximates an aerobic fitness score of 45, the established standard for firefighters. Applicants shall be disqualified for appointment if they fail to meet any physical requirement.
- You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
- You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. An allowance will be provided.
- You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime.
- Subject to frequent extended travel, particularly during fire season. You must obtain a government charge card for travel.
- If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
QualificationsSelective Factors: The applicant must have possessed all of the following National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) incident management qualifications and training requirements to be considered eligible for this position:
1. Senior Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1)
2. Incident Commander Type 5 (ICT5)
3. Crew Boss (CRWB)
4. S-290 (Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior)
5. Intermediate Faller (FAL2)
Maximum Age Requirement: This is a primary position covered by enhanced retirement provisions which stipulate mandatory retirement at age 57 after 20 years of service. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, and must not have reached their 37th birthday upon appointment to this position. Two exceptions are allowed: 1) an applicant has prior Federal service in a primary covered position sufficient to complete 20 years of service on or before the mandatory retirement age of 57; or 2) an applicant is a qualified veterans' preference eligible, in which case the MEA is waived and their corresponding retirement age may be higher than 57 after completing 20 years of service.

To qualify at the GS-06 level, applicants must possess the following minimum qualification by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience must have included: performing in Wildland Fire Operations, and at least one of the following wildland fire-fighting functions: Initial attack and Fire-line Suppression Operations; Prescribed Fire Operations; or Helitack Operations. You must include hours per week worked.
To qualify at the GS-07 level, applicants must possess the following minimum qualification by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience must have included: (1) personally performing in Wildland Fire Engine Operations, and at least one of the following wildland fire-fighting functions: Initial attack and Fire-line Suppression Operations; Prescribed Fire Operations; Helitack Operations; and (2) personally leading or supervising others in any two of the following functions: initial attack and suppression hand-crew operations; prescribed fire operations; wildland fire engine crew operations; helitack fire crew operations; providing on-the-job training and conducting daily crew briefings, safety sessions, and/or other basic wildland fire training. You must include hours per week worked.
EDUCATION: Successful completion of one year of graduate level education in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position. IN ADDITION, I possess the knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques of wildland firefighting, as demonstrated by wildland firefighting experience. You must include transcripts.

Physical Demands: Essential functions require arduous exertion for protracted periods of time such as, but not limited to, extensive running, walking, climbing, kneeling, stooping, pulling hoses, jumping and twisting. Duties involve fieldwork requiring above average physical performance, endurance and superior conditioning. Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar activities requiring at least average agility and dexterity. Duties include demands for strenuous activities in emergencies under adverse environmental conditions and over extended periods of time. Operation of some specialized fire equipment can place extended physical stress on employee during fire activities.
Working Conditions: The work is primarily performed in forest, range and desert environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with vegetation, and in smoky conditions, etc. Temperatures vary from above 100 degrees F to below freezing. Risks include smoke inhalation, fire entrapment, snake or insect bites and stings, exposure to excessive machinery noise, and falling and rolling material. Employee must adjust and cope with exposure to adverse weather elements, dust and smoke, poor sleeping and eating conditions and unpredictable sets of circumstances. Employee may be required to live in backcountry camps for extended periods of time. The hazardous nature of the work requires that personal protective equipment be worn (boots, hard hat, gloves, flame resistant clothing, etc.). Work may require travel by fixed-wing or rotor-wing aircraft.
Air Quality: Poor air quality afflicts Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, especially during summer months - generally May to October. High ozone levels may be the most harmful pollutant here.
