As an Actuary for the VBA you will:
Compile Statistical Data for Analysis and Reports This will involve actuarial expertise in applying a wide variety of projections across the full range of the Veterans Affairs benefit programs with a focus on disability compensation and other post-employment benefit programs. Specific duties include: developing actuarial liability for various programs as required for financial reporting; preparing and defending formal actuarial reports; providing a high level of predictive modeling and research; and advanced actuarial projection, statistical analysis, data mining, predictive modeling and innovative research.
Estimate Probability and Cost This will involve developing new approaches to problems using advanced data mining and predictive techniques (e.g. decision tree, GLM, NN, MARS). Specific duties include: building predictive models using diverse data sources; implementing model results into organizational decisions and strategies; developing in-house knowledge of various model and recommendations for their future use; and performing advanced programming in SAS, Excel, Access or other software to perform data mining and predictive modeling activities.
Design, Test and Administer Strategies to Minimize Risk This will involve providing authoritative actuarial consultation and advice on a wide range of program issues. Specific duties include: evaluating proposed legislation affecting veterans benefit programs for cost, impact and actuarial soundness; preparing supporting evidence for the findings that can be understood by a layman; designing ad-hoc models and analyses; working closely with organizational elements and communicating with actuaries and technicians on matters pertaining to the actuarial aspects of the VA's services and compensation programs; and working with both interagency and external contractors on a project basis.
