    As a Mechanical Engineer within the Machinery Branch, the role of this position is to review proposed marine system designs for commercial ships, mobile offshore drilling units and floating Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) facilities for compliance with federal and international safety programs. Systems reviewed include high pressure piping, pressure vessels, firefighting systems, shipboard propulsion, hydraulic steering and control, oil and chemical cargo handling, and auxiliary machinery systems.

    • Providing feedback and process guidance to ship owners, operators, engineers, consulting engineers and system vendors, marine inspectors, and classification society representatives.  
    • Reviewing designs and laboratory test results of pollution prevention equipment including oily water separators, oil content monitors, marine sanitation devices and incinerators to determine acceptability and qualification of equipment type approval.
    • Providing policy and procedural consultation, advice and guidance on complex engineering, regulatory, and compliance issues for Coast Guard field units, industry representatives and vessel classification societies.
    • Evaluating the impact on existing international and US regulations and safety practices; and reviewing current technological developments in the design of shipboard marine engineering and pollution prevention systems.
    • Performing quality assurance reviews of plan review activity delegated to Authorized Classification Societies for the purpose of auditing their performance.
