    The James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center consists of a parent site, located in Altoona, PA and 5 community based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) located in DuBois, Huntingdon, Indiana, Johnstown & State College, PA. The medical center serves Veterans from a 14 county area in Central PA, providing exceptional health care in the areas of Acute Care, Behavioral Health, Diagnostic Services, Urgent Care, Long Term Care, Pharmacy, Primary Care, Social Services, Specialty Care & Women's Health.

    Responsibilities

    DUTIES: This position is assigned to the Medicine Service, with responsibilities on the Inpatient Unit and Urgent Care Center (UCC) at the James E Van Zandt Medical Center. The physician (Hospitalist) is responsible for providing direct patient care and management.
    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    Inpatient:
    History and physical examination
    Ongoing patient care for assigned patients within privileges
    Order diagnostic studies and tests
    Initiate and expedite requests for specialty consultations
    Provide education and counseling of patients and families, and preventive health care, medical treatments, and reasons for diagnostic testing
    Admit patients to inpatient unit or discharge patients to home as medically indicated
    Arrange transfers of patients to other facilities when a higher level of care is indicated
    Complete all required documentation in the electronic medical record to comply with The Joint Commission Requirements.
    Will also at time provide care and coverage for patients in the Community Living Center (CLC) and Infusion Clinic which are housed in the same building.


    UCC:
    Evaluate and manage patients in the UCC
    Order and evaluate results of diagnostic studies and tests
    Initiate and expedite requests and referrals for specialty consultations
    Admit patients to inpatient unit or discharge patients to home as medically indicated
    Arrange transfers of patients to other facilities when a higher level of care is indicated
    Complete all required documentation in the electronic medical record

    Recruitment: Full time/part time
    Tour of Duty - Compressed Tour available. The incumbent will be required to rotate through tours to meet patient care needs around the clock including nights, holidays, and weekends.
    Must have current BLS and ACLS certifications.
    Telehealth: Knowledge of Telehealth processes and procedures.
    Travel Required: You may be expected to travel to VAMC Altoona as needed.
