As an NPS Visitor Use Assistant, 80% of this position's responsibilities are in fee collection. The incumbent will be responsible for collecting appropriate fees at either the main or secondary park entrance station using a cash register or point-of-sale system. On rare occasions, fee collection may be done at the visitor center. The incumbent will perform opening and closing shift functions and issue various passes in accordance with established guidelines, and occasionally process refunds and upgrades. Incumbent will be responsible for completing end-of-shift paperwork to verify monies collected, accountable stock sold, and machine transactions using the journal tapes and a register of voided transactions. The incumbent will also serve as a front-line representative of the agency, providing answers to recurring visitor questions concerning the park and surrounding areas. Incumbent will also provide directions, distribute maps, brochures, and other park materials to visitors.
The remaining 20% of this position's responsibilities include, but are not limited to: operating a radio for communication with other staff as needed, gathering information from reporting parties and notifying appropriate personnel, performing traffic control, performing minor maintenance duties to ensure a safe and clean workspace, restocking of supplies, and other duties and non-grade controlling functions as assigned.
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
You will NOT be considered under Pathways unless you provide supporting information from your school. Documentation may be provided in letter format from your academic advisor, school counselor, admission office, etc. to prove enrollment OR it may be provided in the form of several official documents from your school such as a copy of your official transcripts and a copy of your class schedule for next semester. Copies of documents from your school website are acceptable if they contain all relevant information as listed above. Letters from advisors or other school officials must be on school letterhead.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
If selected, you will be required to sign a Pathways Agreement which specifies the conditions of your employment as we've indicated in this job announcement. You must continue to meet the Pathways Program requirements throughout the duration of your appointment. To verify that you do, we will require proof of your continued enrollment and good standing each semester or grading period throughout your internship. Failure to do so will result in termination of your internship and employment.
Physical Demands: Standing for long periods of time, walking, bending, lifting of moderately heavy items and sedentary work is required. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts and the responsibility of dealing with large amounts of money.
Working Conditions: Work is often performed in small, outdoor structures with open windows which results in exposure to extremes of temperature, rain, snow, wind, and direct sunlight. Park areas may be geographically located in areas of high elevation, rugged terrain or dense populations. High levels of vehicle noise and emissions may exist during heavy visitation periods. Duties may be performed alone in isolated locations.
Positions are temporary with mixed work schedules based on student's schedule and the needs of the agency. Work may be part-time or full-time
