    Summary

    As the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), he/she will address clinical and administrative issues and potential barriers and proposes strategies for resolution. This leader can effectively communicate both programmatic successes, challenges, and advocate for necessary resources.

    Responsibilities

    The incumbent serves as the Chief Medical Officer for Veterans Integrated Service Network 9 (VISN 9) of the Veterans Health Administration. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) MidSouth Healthcare Network (VISN 9) is an integrated health care delivery system comprised of five complexity Level-1 Joint Commission accredited medical centers, fifty Community Based Outpatient Clinic, and three Community Living Centers that serve more than 365,000 enrolled Veterans residing in Kentucky, Tennessee, and parts of Indiana, Virginia, Georgia, Arkansas, and Mississippi.
    VISN 9 delivers health care services through a network of community-based and home care services, linked access points, medical centers and clinics. VISN programs are coordinated with those of other VISNs located throughout the county. A Headquarters in Washington, DC, provides policy development and support to VISN operations.

    The Chief Medical Officer reports to the VISN Director and serves as the VISN officer responsible for clinical operations. As such, he/she functions as a member of the senior management team, applying solid health care administration skills and innovation to ensure that resources are directed toward providing high quality, cost effective care. Service delivery is provided in concert with the highest professional standards and in keeping with best practices of the health care industry.

    Chief Medical officers interface with many individuals, organizations and groups to assure coordination of services and ongoing communication with key internal and external stakeholders. Additionally, the Chief Medical officer provides direct interface between the VISN and academic affiliates, serving to coordinate local academic partnerships with professional schools throughout the VISN. Interface is also provided with consumers, Veterans service organizations, Headquarters staff offices, Congressional members, Veterans Affairs committee staff and others influencing, or influenced by, the VISN.
