    Serves as a Histotechnologist in the Histology Section at the VA Medical Center, Washington, DC, which is a large acute care hospital affiliated with three medical schools. Is responsible for performing, evaluating, and maintaining all complex procedures required to support diagnostic testing, and for training personnel on these procedures. Develops, establishes, improves and solves problems with complex testing procedures and implements new testing methods.

    Major duties include but are not limited to:

    • Develops, establishes, improves and solves problems with complex testing procedures and implement new testing methods;
    • Collects, harvests and processes all controlled material used;
    • Performs and oversees various testing methods/techniques to include Immunohistochemical (IHC), direct immunofluorescence (DIF) and In Situ Hybridization (ISH) staining;
    • Performs routine and special procedures including accessioning, grossing, embedding, microtomy, Haemotoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining, and special stains;
    • Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots instruments for embedding, cutting, and staining;
    • Performs all technical aspects for evaluation, embedding, sectioning and staining of Mohs surgical specimens;
    • Coordinates autopsy scheduling and paperwork;
    • Prepares, stores, and maintains inventory of antibodies, reagents, and supplies for IHC staining procedures;
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
    DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

    Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
