All students who are accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, including preference eligible (veterans) meeting this criteria.
Your major duties will include but are not limited to:
* Leads or conducts field searches for populations of plant species;
* Photographs, collects, and mounts plant specimens encountered at important stages of development to facilitate field identification by less experienced personnel, Identifies and processes specimens for herbarium;
* Researches and catalogues and identifies status of various species through current literature or other sources;
* Collects ecological site information for sensitive, threatened, or endangered plants as well as population distributions, condition, trend, associated species, land form of occurrence, geology, and soil type to determine factors limiting distribution and potential for enhancement through management measures;
* Compiles data into appropriate reports. Enters and retrieves data from automated databases;
* To perform duties of this position requires the use of motor vehicles. In most cases this will be a 4-wheel drive vehicle or ATV. Performs other duties as assigned.
This position is for students accepted for enrollment or are currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school, on a full- or half-time basis (as defined by the academic institution in which the student is enrolled).
This is a career development, excepted service appointment under the BLM Pathways Internship Program that is expected to last more than one year. The BLM will require the selected applicant to complete a Participant Agreement in which the selectee must provide an anticipated date for completing all degree program requirements, and show continual progression toward meeting the stated anticipated date.
The agency may noncompetitively convert a Career/Indefinite Intern who is a U. S. citizen to a term or permanent appointment in the competitive service, as long as the Intern meets all agency program requirements and the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for the target occupational series at the time of completing all education requirements. If converted to a permanent or term appointment, the anticipated target position will be a Program Analyst with full performance level (FPL) of GS-11; however, the target position and FPL may change based on the need of the organization at that time.
You will need to submit your college transcripts or verification of current enrollment. Official transcripts are not required during the application process, but may be required before you report to work.
To be eligible, an applicant must:
1) Be at least 16 years of age or older for a non-arduous or non-hazardous duty position.
2) Be a student who has been accepted for enrollment or is currently enrolled at least half-time in a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) seeking program in an accredited technical or vocation school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school.
3) Possess a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 or higher.

To qualify for the GS-07, you must satisfy one of the following requirements:
1) Specialized Experience: You must show that you have one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level (GS-06). Examples of specialized experience may include surveying, mapping and documenting a variety of wildlife species and habitat conditions; compiling occurrence and distribution data, cover maps, and herbarium study mounts; assisting in performing botanical studies and in constructing habitat improvement structures; compiling data obtained through soil inventory; and assembling data into a logical sequence for review.
2) Education Substitution: One year of graduate education in biological sciences or a directly related field.
3) Combination of Specialized Experience and Education: an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Only graduate level education may be combined with experience.
If the position is filled at the lower grade level, subsequent promotion to the next higher grade level per the target full performance is permissible without further competition. The promotion is not guaranteed but dependent upon administrative approval and the agency’s continuing need for an actual assignment and performance at the higher level duties.
The entire period served as a Career/Indefinite Intern counts as the appointee’s trial period. Prior Federal civilian service is credited toward the completion of the required trial period in the same manner as prescribed in 5 CFR 315.802.
Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior. Any travel, transportation and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.
Frequent field work is necessary, which may involve some discomfort in extremes temperature or inclement weather and walking or riding vehicles over rough terrain. You may perform duties that require recurring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching or lifting moderately heavy items, such as equipment and samples.

This is for a Pathways Internship position that would lead to a full time permanent Biological Science Technician (Plants) within the Royal Gorge Field Office.
