The Supervisory General Engineer (Assistant Chief) is located in the office of the Chief, Engineering Service. The Assistant Chief Engineer actively participates in formal and informal engineering/management sessions, including active participation in the making of engineering/management decisions that are related to Engineering Service policy, settling matters and long-range program planning. Full administrative and managerial responsibility for the hospital engineering program is the responsibility of the Chief Engineer. The incumbent, as a full assistant, shares this responsibility. This responsibility includes managing, planning, organizing, staffing, directing, controlling and evaluating the engineering program. All these activities are coordinated with other administrative and medical departments in the hospital. This responsibility includes the continuous operation of essential patient services and rapid response to conditions which may interfere with such services.

Physical Requirements: While much of the work is accomplished in an office, there is a considerable amount of walking, stooping, climbing, crawling, and stretching required during site visits, inspections, and maintenance instructions. Emergency actions during response to fire and disaster situations will required considerable physical exertion over long periods of time. Numerous work site visits are required which will involve inclement weather; work in hot, restrictive areas; climbing on roofs; some exposure to electrical shock; steam burns, hot water scalds; cuts, scrapes, and bruises. From time to time safety equipment such as goggles, hard hats, and protective clothing must be worn.
Time-in-Grade Restriction - Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. For a GS-12 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-11 level.
