    Summary

    The Staff Nurse is accountable to the Nurse Manager Surgical Services for the completion of his/her assignment, the quality of care given, and the display of professional behavior. This RN is accountable to the Associate Director, Patient Care Services for ensuring the Standards of Patient Care and Nursing Practice are upheld. This RN will work collaboratively with all levels of Patient Care Services Leadership, personnel, and all services within the healthcare system.

    Responsibilities

    The RN is responsible for facilitating the fulfillment of the VAMTHCS Mission, Vision, and Values. The RN practices within the Surgical Services, and under the umbrella of PCS providing inpatient and outpatient diagnostic and therapeutic procedural patient care in the clinical setting of the Special Procedures unit. This unit encompasses only the Endoscopy suite. The RN incorporates case management standards of practice relating to consult review and processing to include collaborative assessments, planning, facilitation, communication, and advocacy that promote quality cost-effective outcomes. This includes patient contacts, reviewing patient records, assuring/assisting with completion of pre procedural testing and preparation, scheduling and pre/post procedural education. The RN is required to function in two separate roles including the administration of conscious sedation and the provision of technical assistance to the GI providers during minor procedures and endoscopies. The RN is responsible for the care of the patient undergoing these procedures and the associated documentation. The RN is responsible for setting up and managing both 'clean' and sterile procedural environments as well as the handling of any instrumentation or equipment associated with 'scope' type procedures. The RN is responsible for monitoring the post-procedural patient whom has received IV conscious sedation or Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC) until transfer to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit. The patient population served includes adult and elderly Veterans.
    The RN applies evidence-based practice while providing care based upon the nursing process which includes systematic data gathering, assessment, appropriate nursing judgment, and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems through such services as case finding, health teaching, health counseling; provision of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being; and executing medical regimens including administering medications and treatments prescribed by a licensed provider. The nurse's primary commitment is to the patient, whether an individual, family, group, or community (ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses). Other duties as assigned.

    Work Schedule: 9 hour compressed tour Weekdays from 6:30 am to 4:pm with every other Friday off.
