    This position is located in the Office of Nuclear Safety Enforcement within the Office of Enterprise Assessments.  This Office promotes overall improvement in the Department’s safety and security programs through management and implementation of the DOE enforcement programs for safety and classified information security that are authorized by the Atomic Energy Act.

    Responsibilities

    As a Nuclear Engineer, you will:

    • Participate on teams of DOE and contractor technical experts on a regular and recurring basis, in the conduct of investigations, inspections, reviews, and associated technical analyses at DOE's nuclear and non-nuclear facilities and laboratories.
    • Evaluate contractor management, procedures, and practices of the facility and the effect of these of these relationships on the safety of operations to determine the status of compliances with nuclear safety rules. Serves as a Nuclear Safety Enforcement Specialist in the area of nuclear safety operations. Advises the Director, Office of Nuclear Safety Enforcement (EA-12), and the Director, Office of Enforcement, on whether a contractor is adequately ensuring nuclear safety.
    • Review reports to ensure the nuclear and radiological safety of DOE nuclear facilities, programs, projects and activities are properly analyzed, evaluated, documented, and approved; and facilities and systems are designed, constructed, operated, maintained, decontaminated, decommissioned, and environmentally restored in a manner that provides adequate health and safety protection in accordance with DOE nuclear safety rules.
    • Evaluate the results of nuclear safety investigations and inspections and recommends enforcement proceedings and outcomes in accordance with the DOE enforcement policy.
    • Provide expert advice and direction for more complex technical enforcement investigations and/or inspections to determine contractor compliance with DOE’s nuclear safety rules. Presents results to DOE and Field managers as appropriate, testifies in Court, before Hearings Examiners or Administrative Law Judges when requested.
