FERC’s role is to oversee various aspects of the energy industry, including transmission of electricity, natural gas and oil. We also analyze proposals to build liquefied natural gas terminals and interstate natural gas pipelines and license hydropower projects. To help support the modernization of the electric system here in the U.S., we are focusing on issues associated with a smarter grid.
The mission of the Office of Energy Projects is to foster economic and environmental benefits for the nation in support of the Commission’s review and oversight of hydroelectric and natural gas pipeline energy projects in its jurisdiction. OEP has the engineering and environmental expertise to focus on evaluating project siting and construction; balancing environmental and other concerns; ensuring compliance; and safeguarding the public. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is seeking a highly motivated and qualified candidate for an exciting full-time permanent position within Office of Energy Projects. The position is located in the Washington Office, and the incumbent will serve as an Archaeologist. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission assists consumers in obtaining reliable, efficient and sustainable energy services at a reasonable cost through appropriate regulatory and market means. Major Duties for the position:
- Serve as a technical expert and analyze moderately complex data on archaeological, historical, and other cultural resources as they relate to the construction, restoration, and operation of natural gas projects.
- Serve as project manager and a resource specialist as part of a project team for the environmental review of major natural gas project applications before the Commission, pursuant to NEPA and in accordance with FERC's regulations, including review of applications and environmental reports filed with the Commission, conducting studies and analysis, performing field inspections, and proposing recommendations to avoid and mitigate impacts.
- Prepare written environmental reports, review the work of other staff and consultants, and represent the Commission in meetings with applicants, agencies, and interested stakeholders. Provide technical team leadership, staff coordination, and guidance.

In addition to meeting the educational requirement for archaeologist, candidates must have one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-9 level OR have completed requirements for a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree. If qualifying on PhD, all graduation requirements must be met and completed by December 31, 2018.
