    This position serves as the Chief Veterinary Medical Officer (CVMO) located in the VHA Office for Research and Development. The CVMO is the senior policy and supervisory veterinarian and directs the VA animal research support program.

    Providing clinical support for laboratory animals used in research activities;
    Advising on the proper housing, containment, use, surveillance, environmental enrichment, and healthcare of research animals;
    Planning and implementing strategies to prevent infectious agents from entering the animal facility;
    Ensuring the use of laboratory animals is consistent with humane principles and the program meets all applicable Federal regulations and guidelines;
    Consulting with research staff to determine the most suitable animal model for achieving desired research goals and minimizing pain and distress to animals;
    Providing guidance on surgical and post-operative measures;
    Conducting in-person and phone briefings for print and web media outlets as well as for members of Congress and their staff members, and conducting on-camera interviews;
    Testifying at Congressional hearings that concern animal research topics, representing and defending agency policy positions;
    Performing related duties as required.

    Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm.
