The Congressional Budget Office is a small nonpartisan agency that provides economic and budgetary analysis to the Congress. The Microeconomic Studies Division is seeking one or more labor economists in the Employment and Income Security Unit to analyze the budgetary and economic effects of a broad range of federal programs and policies. The Employment and Income Security Unit conducts research and analysis on topics of interest to the Congress. Those topics include labor markets, income, poverty, cash and in-kind assistance programs, disability policies, education and training, and immigration. Recently completed work includes an evaluation of the effects of changing the minimum wage on employment and family income, an analysis of options for changing the retirement system for federal workers, an examination of trends in labor force participation, and an assessment of federal aid for postsecondary students.
Tier One Background Investigation
Applicants must have either a Ph.D. in economics or a related discipline or a masters degree in those fields and equivalent experience. They should also have strong quantitative skills and the ability to initiate and complete research projects independently and as part of a team. Finally, they should possess a desire to work on issues of current and potential interest to the Congress and an ability to effectively communicate their work to nontechnical audiences in writing and orally.
