The VA San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS) is seeking a Full-Time, Board Certified/Eligible physician to serve as the Chief of Surgery. The Chief of Surgery is designated Clinical 50% and Administrative 50% of their time. The Chief is expected to remain privileged and provide clinical services in their specialty field. They ensure practice-based learning and improvement and demonstrates ability to use scientific evidence and methods to investigate, evaluate, and improve patient care.

The Chief of Surgery is responsible for the overall operation of a complex surgical program that includes the entire range of surgical care, ranging from ambulatory surgery to surgical critical care. The Chief of Surgery oversees the clinical activities of all sections of the Surgical Service.
The successful candidate should be proficient in administrative, programmatic, clinical, and academic oversight of surgical programs to ensure the delivery of high quality patient care. The incumbent should have management experience, some of which must have been within the Veterans Health Administration, knowledge of regulatory and accreditation requirements, utilization review and quality improvement, outstanding interpersonal skills, and must have skill to lead and promote surgical staff excellence and staff development. The Incumbent directs health care programs, delegating authority and responsibility to meet both the medical center and service goals and to apply that knowledge to improve and optimize health care and is responsible for the fiscal management of the department.
The Incumbent establishes and promotes an atmosphere of unity through collaborative practice and effective communication between all staff disciplines within the Surgical Service. The Chief of Surgery is also responsible to help foster a high level of patient and staff satisfaction. The Chief of Surgery is expected to demonstrate interpersonal communication skills and behaviors that reflect a commitment to continuous professional development, ethical practice, understanding and sensitivity to diversity, and a responsible attitude toward their patients and profession.
The Chief of Surgery collaborates and represents the Surgical Service in Medical Executive Board, Credentialing and Privileging, various Medical Center, Surgical Service committees and VISN surgical workgroups. The Incumbent is an active member of the Medical Staff Council and Medical Practice Group Strategic Business Unit, and meet regularly with the Chief of Staff.
Work Schedule: VA San Diego Healthcare System is a 24/7 operation. The Surgery Chief, may be required to work days, nights, off-tour, weekends, and holidays to meet the needs of our Veterans.
