The incumbent will perform genetic and phenotypic studies to characterize extremely heat resistant Enterobacteriaceae isolated in red meat processing. Work will include the development and validation of molecular assays for the identification of heat resistant Enterobacteriaceae; designing and using novel culture techniques to isolate heat resistant Enterobacteriaceae; and performing studies to identify the physiologic processes responsible for heat resistance and its genetic transfer between bacteria. Methods used will include, but are not limited to, microscopy, PCR, real-time quantitative PCR, culture methods and forced bacterial conjugations, genomic sequencing library preparation, and analysis of data from NGS and phenotype arrays. The incumbent will be expected to present and publish results of this work as well as participate in other projects focused on the mitigation of foodborne pathogens in cattle and swine.

This position requires a recent (within the last 4 years) Ph.D in microbiology; or biology, chemistry or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics and college algebra.
Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
