You will serve as a Lead Wildland Firefighter and lead three or more wildland fire crew members. You will lead and perform wildland firefighting directly related to fire suppression and control activities including suppression, preparedness, prevention, monitoring hazardous fuels reduction and prescribed burning. You will gather and consider information such as weather data, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior. You will assist in the preparation of hazardous fuels treatment plans and burn plans. You will draft fire perimeter maps and monitor smoke dispersal and fire effects. You will operate and maintain specialized equipment used to respond to wildland and prescribed fire operations including emergency repair as necessary to permit continued use of equipment. You will communicate with the fire crews and others in the organization to gather and exchange information and balance and distribute workload. You will also communicate with the general public and land owners. It will also be your responsibility to counsel and advise employees in the areas of wildland fire operations and administrative practices.
This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectee is guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. The typical season for this position is April through September, but can be variable during these months due to requirements or weather conditions.
There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade level(s) of this announcement.

Physical Demands: Arduous: Duties involve fieldwork requiring above average physical performance, endurance and superior conditioning. Performs rigorous duties which requires strenuous physical exertion for extended periods including walking, climbing, shoveling, chopping, throwing and lifting, frequently carries objects weighing over 50 pounds. Duties include strenuous activities in emergencies under adverse environmental conditions and over extended period of time. Operation of some specialized fire equipment can place extended physical stress on you during fire activities. The rigorous duties of this position require you to meet the physical fitness test for arduous positions.
Working Conditions: The work if primarily performed outdoors in forest environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rock or covered by vegetation. Temperature can exceed 100 degrees F and fall below freezing. Risks include smoke inhalation, fire entrapment, snake and insect bites and stings, exposure to excessive machinery noise, and falling and rolling material. You must adjust and cope with exposure to weather elements, dust and smoke, poor bivouac and eating situations under unpredictable set of circumstances. May be required to live in backcountry camps for extended periods of time. The hazardous nature of the job requires that protective clothing be worn (hard hat, gloves, boots, flame resistant clothing and other personnel protective equipment). Work may require travel by light fixed-wing or rotor-wing aircraft and other methods.
