The Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastucture (OAC) supports and coordinates the exploration, development, acquisition, and provision of state-of-the-art cyberinfrastructure resources, tools and services essential to the advancement and transformation of science and engineering. OAC also supports forward-looking research and education to expand the future capabilities of the research cyberinfrastructure and takes a broad view that includes development of software suites and tools, exploration of data science and management for pursuing new scientific and engineering frontiers, and other research-driven capabilities. By fostering a vibrant ecosystem of technologies and the development of a skilled, multidisciplinary workforce of developers, researchers, staff and users, OAC serves the growing community of scientists and engineers across all disciplines, whose work relies on access to computational power, robust community software tools and data, and secure high-speed networking, and expertise in computational and data sciences.
With a staff of approximately 20, OAC has an annual budget of approximately $220 million, and coordinates cyberinfrastructure for all areas of fundamental science and engineering supported by NSF through research grants and awards to universities and other research organizations as well through interaction with all NSF directorates and offices. OAC is positioned within NSF’s Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE).
The Deputy Office Director participates with the Office Director as a member of the CISE and NSF senior management teams and as the Foundation’s principal spokesperson in the area of cyberinfrastructure. Together with the Office Director, the Deputy Office Director has managerial and oversight responsibilities for the effective use of office staff and resources in meeting organization goals and objectives. This includes directing the activities of OAC, assessing needs and trends, developing breakthrough opportunities, implementing overall strategic planning, and steering policy formulation and implementation. The Deputy Office Director supervises and provides leadership and guidance to program officers. The Deputy Office Director assists the Office Director in determining funding requirements, preparing and justifying budget estimates, balancing program needs, allocating resources, overseeing the evaluation of proposals and recommendations for awards and declinations, and representing NSF to relevant external groups. The Deputy Office Director fosters partnerships with other NSF Directorates/Divisions/Offices, Federal agencies, private sector organizations, scientific organizations and the academic community. The Deputy Office Director assumes the Office Director's role in the absence of the Office Director.

Demonstrated ability in liaising with high-level officials of the Federal and scientific and engineering academic communities.
3. Demonstrated broad knowledge of diverse fields of science and engineering including interdisciplinary approaches and solutions to important cross-cutting research and education challenges.
4. Skill in changing and balancing complex and diverse program demands and available resources in response to major advances or changing needs of science and engineering research and technology and demonstrated ability to exercise sound professional judgment in recommending the initiation of research and infrastructure activities.

The Senior Executive Service (SES) covers managerial positions above GS-15 in the Federal Service. Persons appointed to the SES are eligible for health benefits, life insurance, social security, Federal retirement and thrift savings plan coverage, and participate in the Federal leave system. Career appointees are eligible for bonuses based on performance in addition to base pay. Competitive status is not required, veteran's preference does not apply and there are no grade restrictions. New appointees to the SES are required to serve a one-year probationary period.
Final selection of career appointees requires the approval of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM). OPM approval will be based on the selectee's background in the following five executive core qualification areas: (1) Leading Change, (2) Leading People, (3) Results Driven Leadership, (4) Business Acumen, and (5) Building Coalitions. This position may also be filled on a one-to-three year Senior Executive Service (SES) Limited Term Appointment or on an Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) assignment basis. Under the provisions of the IPA, assignees remain on the payroll of his/her home institution and the institution continues to administer pay and benefits. The National Science Foundation (NSF) will reimburse the home institution for NSF's negotiated share of the costs.
