A successful candidate in this position will serve as a staff member under a Software Quality Assurance lead. Additionally, the successful candidate will support the closure of Software Quality Assurance (SQA) issues and policies concerning operations safety of nuclear facilities and activities. As a Computer Engineer you will:
The selectee must test negative to a drug test prior to being appointed and will be subject to random testing. Failure to pass subsequent tests could result in disciplinary action, up to including removal from the Federal service.
This position is covered by the DOE Technical Qualifications Program (TQP). The incumbent is required to meet core requirements within the Safety Software Quality Assurance Functional Area Qualification Standard (DOE-STD-1172-2011) within 18 months, from start date or face removal.
Engineering: Basic Requirements
An Engineering Degree: To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor’s degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.
OR
Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following:
Professional registration or licensure -- Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT) 1, or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. Absent other means of qualifying under this standard, those applicants who achieved such registration by means other than written test (e.g., State grandfather or eminence provisions) are eligible only for positions that are within or closely related to the specialty field of their registration. For example, an applicant who attains registration through a State Board's eminence provision as a manufacturing engineer typically would be rated eligible only for manufacturing engineering positions.
Education must be obtained from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Also, foreign education must be reviewed by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Qualifications
A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower GS grade level in the Federal Service directly related to the position being filled, and which has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Specialized experience at the GS-9 is defined as: Knowledge of, and skill in applying software quality assurance, theories, concepts, principles and methodologies a variety of engineering and scientific disciplines sufficient to research, analyze, interpret, evaluate and carry out routine conventional assignments.
Or a combination of superior academic achievement and 1 year of appropriate professional experience is qualifying at GS-9.
Or Successful completion of a 5-year program of study of at least 160 semester hours leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering is qualifying and 1 year of appropriate professional experience is qualifying at grade GS-9.
"Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
