As an Electronics Engineer specializing in Optical Engineering, you will serve as a technical engineering specialist and lead the test, checkout, and flight preparation of electronic instrumentation systems or equipment that involve new concepts and varied problems to be solved. You will provide technical direction to program or project management, government and contractor engineers, and technicians during installation, modification, and checkout of various electronic equipment, optical components, optical subsystems, or optical instrumentation systems, such as flight optical systems or optical measurement and instrumentation systems and subsystems. Assignments typically involve difficult problems that are unique or controversial in nature requiring the incumbent to make complex engineering decisions while considering major programmatic issues. You will develop and/or approve detailed test procedures, conducts tests, evaluates results, and/or devises and initiates system design modifications to eliminate anomalies. You will investigate the application of new optics and detector technology to implement proposed alignment procedures and tests.
You will provide technical leadership and direction to instrument teams in the areas of optical assembly, alignment, testing, and metrology. You will develop equipment specifications, test plans and procedures, and laboratory setups to insure that the instrument meets its scientific and engineering specifications. You will perform design and implementation work of considerable difficulty on equipment or systems such as optical or opto-electronic sensor systems and instrumentation. Problems encountered involve advanced optical system designs that require application of state-of-the-art components. You will write and review technical goals and approaches; monitors progress during development, design, and testing. You will provide advanced technical assistance in the development, design, and integration of assigned optics technologies and systems.
