Employee will serve as a Health Science Specialist - Exercise Physiologist assigned to the War Related Illness and Injury Study Center (WRIISC) located at the Veterans New Jersey Healthcare System in East Orange, New Jersey. Employee will facilitate research programs for investigators and provide clinical support to WRIISC and colleagues. - Research Duties: recruits, schedules, and conducts physiological testing on human subjects and patients. Analyzes physiological data. Conducts pre-test screening with patients/subjects with emphasis on contraindications to testing; recognizes and identifies normal/abnormal cardio-respiratory responses to exercise, as well as test end points. Responds to emergency situations, including exercise cessation and initiating basic life support. Prepares documents for institutional review board (IRB) and research compliance. Conducts literature reviews and summarizes relevant information. Educates patients, peers and the community on topics related to exercise, which may include public speaking and writing. Assist with grant applications, manuscripts and abstracts. Inspects, cleans, calibrates and maintains laboratory equipment.
- Clinical Care of Patients: performs the following tasks directly related to exercise physiology: screening, testing, prescription, supervision, and evaluates exercise/physical activity related outcomes. Summarizes the results of these evaluations and tasks for inclusion in computer databases and summary statement to the patient. Participates in clinical team meetings on an as-needed basis for evaluation of findings and recommendations.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm
NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed 3 years). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration (more than 1 year but not more than 4). Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition (up to the 4 year maximum). The appointment to a Term position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.
