    THIS IS FULL TIME TERM APPOINTMENT NOT-TO-EXCEED 13 MONTHS WHICH DOES NOT CONFER COMPETITIVE FEDERAL STATUS TO THE INCUMBENT.  THE SELECTED CANDIDATE WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR HEALTH INSURANCE, LIFE INSURANCE AND SICK/ANNUAL LEAVE ACCRUAL.

    The National Gallery of Art serves the United States in a national role by preserving, collecting, exhibiting, and fostering the understanding of works of art at the highest possible museum and scholarly standards. At the forefront of preserving the Gallery’s collection is the Conservation Division. The primary purpose of this position is to support object conservation, preservation and scientific research activities related to the care of works of art in the permanent collection and on loan to the Gallery.

    Responsibilities

    Primarily focused on object conservation, the incumbent will be assigned duties like:

    • Coordinates assigned conservation activities.
    • Communicates with conservators, curators, registrars, designers and other staff regarding related matters. 
    • Maintains and tracks budgets, and exhibition and outgoing loan schedules for the preparation of works of art.
    • Assists with managing facilities within conservation and scientific research departments, including laboratories, matting-framing studios, x-ray facilities, solvent storage, and/or workshop to provide an efficient and safe workspace. 
    • Maintains an inventory of lab equipment and supplies.
    • Under supervision of conservators, examines and performs minor treatments to works of art. 
    • Assists conservators with the implementation of complex treatments. 
    • Assists conservators with preparing objects for exhibition, loan and storage.
    • Assists conservators and scientists in the creation and management of digital and paper-based records.  
    • Scans existing documents, photographs, slides, and x-radiographs.
