Physical Demands: The work is performed mostly outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, or uneven or rocky surfaces. The position requires physical exertion such as, but not limited, driving over unpaved roads, walking over rough terrain or inclines, standing for long periods of time, bending, crouching and stooping, digging, hiking, lifting, biking, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Work may involve early morning hours, night hours, or daytime hours and may require working on holidays. It can require carrying heavy backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads.
Work Environment: Most work will be performed out of doors, in all types of weather conditions, terrain, and elevations. Work may take place in an extremely remote environment and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. Indoor duties are performed in a normal office setting.

GS-05 Duties: The employee will perform varied tasks that require a general knowledge of program areas such as enforcement of use requirements or natural and historical information interpretation and development. As a Park Ranger your duties will include but will not be limited to:
-Administers operations, such as day-to-day operation of a recreation site.
-Carries out resource management or protection work, such as evaluation of resource conditions, or enforcement of use requirements.
-Makes group and individual contact to provide information or answer questions about recreational activities, historical, cultural or natural site information.
GS-07 Duties: The employee will work independently, receiving assignment of substantial variety for which established precedents are not fully applicable. Thus, your duties will include but will not be limited to:
-Advises visitors concerning safety, fire prevention, amenities available, and proper and authorized uses of recreational facilities. Posts daily weather, flash flood, and road conditions for safety of visitors. Patrols and inspects facilities ensuring compliance with rules and regulations (i.e., parking, camp fires, noise level, sanitation, safety).
-Presents formal and interpretive programs to include but not limited to orientation talks, environmental education programs, conducts walks, demonstrations and campfire programs
-Coordinates projects identified in the annual work plan; including planning, designing, surveying, construction, maintenance of trails, campsites, etc., as required.
-Prepares recreation areas/sites for visitor use. Oversees fee collection activities, maintaining records on and accounting for funds and submitting deposits.
-Plans day-to-day operations of a recreation area or site that provides such facilities as camping, water sports or picnic areas, coordinating routine activities with maintenance personnel.
This position requires one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade or appropriate education, or a combination of education and experience.
Education may be substituted for or combined with experience.
If using education to qualify: Bachelor's or graduate level degree major study must be in: natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled. You will need to clearly state your undergraduate/graduate degree(s) and submit your college transcripts or a listing of your college courses that includes hours and grades.

Selection for this vacancy will be made at the GS-05 or GS-07 grade level. Full performance level is GS-07. The GS-05 grade level comprises an intervening GS-06 grade level career ladder promotion, leading up to the full performance level of GS-07. If selection is made at the GS-5 grade level, once all eligibility requirements are met the incumbent will be eligible for an intervening career ladder promotion to the GS-06 grade level and GS-07 respectively. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the next higher grade. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon the employee completing the time-in-grade and satisfactory performance requirements, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.
