The Temperate Tree Fruit and Vegetable Research Unit located in Wapato, Washington, is seeking a permanent, full time, Research Geneticist (Plants) for their worksite in Prosser, Washington. The mission of this project is to develop or identify new breeding lines, germplasm and named cultivars with superior quality, disease and pest resistance, and nutritional value.
Vacant research positions may be filled at one of several grade levels depending upon the scientific impact of the person selected. For this reason, you are encouraged to apply at all grade levels. A peer review will be required for selections made at grades GS-13 and above and the selectee will be required to submit supplemental materials.
Research scientists have open-ended promotion potential. Research accomplishments and their impact on the duties and responsibilities of positions are evaluated periodically. As a Research Geneticist (Plants) the incumbent will perform the following:
- Conduct pre-breeding using wild species and primitive germplasm to identify and introgress desirable traits into cultivated potato.
- Function in close collaboration with colleagues and industry stakeholders to evaluate germplasm and in identifying and addressing critical needs.
- Use both applied genetics and genomics-assisted breeding for cultivar improvement, including advanced next-generation sequencing and genomic tools such as genome-wide association, genomic selection and comparative genomics, while providing technical expertise and leadership to the Northwest potato breeding effort.
- Conceive, plan and conduct potato breeding research to improve traits such as disease and pest resistance, nutritional value and quality and communicates results in peer-reviewed scientific journals, at scientific conferences and to national and regional stakeholders.
Occasional travel - Incumbent will travel to plot sites. Incumbent will also travel to attend professional meetings and conferences.
