As part of a team assignment, performs routine work in fisheries resource-related projects. Provides biological input into the fish habitat management program and assists in development of fishery management plans. Ensures compliance with portions of fishery management plans; coordinates limited studies of fishery populations; and prepares a variety of written reports or limited environmental analyses. This includes gathering, compiling, and analyzing data to determine fish habitat needs; identifies critical habitat for aquatic organisms; recommending solutions to special issues or problems involving fishery resources; and determining the need for and designing of fish habitat improvement projects; developing project plans for inclusion in Forest program of work; and studying and recommending solutions to special coordination problems involving fish habitat protection.
Works cooperatively with State, Tribal, and Federal fish and water quality management agencies. This includes gathering information for stream and lake management plans, surveys of fish occurrence, mapping key fish habitat for suitability and determining the need for fish habitat enhancement or restoration.
Participates on interdisciplinary teams and prepares environmental analysis reports in assigned functional area.
This position is a field intensive position that will work in difficult terrain and bear habitat with inclement weather. The combination of community isolation and maritime weather can be challenging for some individuals/families. Cordova is a small coastal community (approximately 2,500 year-round residents) that is fairly isolated and not on a road system. The incumbent will spend summer field seasons in the field. Most of the travel to the field is by boat or plane. The field season starts in April and typically ends in October. On occasion, there are winter projects that entail winter field work, but typically the winter is spent in the office.
As a field going position working in brown or black bear habitat, this position is required to be firearm certified for personal and/or crew safety. Executive Order 12564 requires employees designated to carry a firearm to be subject to random drug testing. This position will be subject to random drug testing and will be placed in the applicant testing pool.
This position requires small craft operation certification and is subject to applicant and random drug testing in accordance with USDA Department Regulation 4430-792-2.
The position requires that the incumbent must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license. Incumbent may access operations using all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), watercraft, and/or aircraft.

DRUG TESTING: This is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). Selectee must submit to a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and random testing thereafter. Final appointment and continued employment is conditional on negative results for illegal drug use.
This position requires that the incumbent meet initial and continuing qualifications in the use of firearms as outlined in the Gun Control Act of 1968, amended by the Lautenberg Amendment of 1996.
Must have or be able to obtain the appropriate driver's license to operate required equipment/vehicles as a condition of employment.
May be required to serve a one year probationary period.
