The Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) provides operations support services and business solutions to the community of 10,000 House Members, Officers and staff. The CAO organization comprises more than 650 technical and administrative staff working in a variety of areas, including information technology, finance, budget management, human resources, payroll, child care, food and vending, procurement, logistics and administrative counsel.
The incumbent is responsible for supporting the daily operations of the L&S/Furnishings Upholstery Shop. Major duties include but are not limited to furniture cleaning/conditioning, service calls, shop upkeep, safety, customer service, and workforce planning. Other duties or special projects as assigned.
The position does not have day-to-day supervisory/managerial responsibilities.

• Perform basic upholstery techniques on furniture to include; installing and tying springs, packing cushions, and cutting foam.
• Perform shop upkeep to include daily sweeping of the floor, taking trash bins to the loading dock, general cleaning, and basic maintenance of shop equipment.
• Safely and properly remove covers and padding from furniture in preparation for refurbishment.
• Assist shop personnel with various furniture and furnishings requests from House offices
• Visit House Offices, make deliveries and pickups, and properly receive and stock standard shop supplies as well as large, heavy items such as furniture, sheet goods and solid lumber, shop equipment, carpet, glass, etc.
• Assist shop personnel to include shop safety and equipment maintenance duties.
• With limited supervision, clean and condition leather and fabric furniture to meet the standards of the House Upholstery Shop in the shop and on site.
• With limited supervision, operate furniture cleaning machines to meet the standards of the House Upholstery Shop.
• With direct supervision, upholster furniture using basic upholstery techniques to include building furniture from the frame up, rebuilding existing padding, and installing leather and material coverings.
• With direct supervision, safely operate an industrial sewing machine using leather, fabric, and upholstery materials
• Other duties as assigned.

• 2 years of current experience working in the upholstery trade
• Must possess willingness to take on new opportunities and openness to change. Ability to understand and apply workplace policies, practices, rules and established procedures, as well as exercise sound judgement and discretion required.
• Ability to apply safe and effective techniques for cleaning and conditioning leather and fabric furniture
• Ability to develop all skills necessary for the upholstery trade to include removing covers, tying springs, build up furniture from a bare frame, pack cushions, etc.
• Ability to develop an eye and a feel to upholster furniture with professionalism
• Safely use tools related to the upholstery trade to include hammers, scissors, staple guns, basic power tools and cleaning equipment
• Safely and accurately use an electronic foam cutter to make foam cushions for furniture
• Efficiently perform assigned duties in expected time frames.
• Must follow lead of senior shop personnel and adhere to shop policy, processes, procedures, criteria, and protocol.
• Must be able to accurately read measuring devices to include rulers and tape measures and have basic math skills.
• Attend, retain, and implement related training.
• Capable and willing to work various shifts, extended hours, or weekends to fulfill the U.S. House of Representative’s needs.
• Must be able to meet minimum physical requirements to include physical demands listed below:
- Employees must frequently lift and/or move 50 pounds at a minimum.
- Capable of learning to operate heavy equipment (e.g., forklift, pallet jack, etc.) as required.
- Frequent standing, bending, crouching, lifting, twisting and grasping.
• Must maintain personal appearance and hygiene in a professional, neat, and clean manner to include hair, mustaches, and beards.
• Must keep work area neat and uncluttered.
• Capable of learning House campus layout and work in a team/shop environment.
• Capable of learning applicable policies, standards, laws and regulations affecting the House, CAO, L&S, and the Upholstery Shop.
• Have a general working knowledge of various automated systems and software programs used by the Upholstery Shop.
