The Suborbital and Special Orbital projects Directorate, Aircraft Office (Code 830), is currently seeking a highly skilled individual for a Research Pilot position. In this position, you will serve as an Aerospace Engineer/Research Pilot. You will plan and evaluate test parameters, while also reporting on new sensor installations on NASA-owned and non-NASA-owned aircrafts.

As Research Aerospace Engineer, specializing as a Research Pilot, you will pilot an aircraft and UAS used in research, development, and test programs. You will actively participate with project engineers and scientists responsible for the development, design, testing, evaluation, and reporting on new aircraft concepts and new advanced aircraft systems.
You will pilot one-of-a-kind or highly modified research and development aircraft and advanced simulators in conjunction with research and test projects; develop and conduct qualitative and quantitative test plans to evaluate modified aircraft/UAS stability, control, and performance; conduct reduced gravity research and test projects; provide consultation and technical inputs in support of research efforts, offer engineering expertise from the special vantage point of the pilot, and recommend engineering solutions to analyzing and evaluating test results and preparing sections of research reports; serve as instructor pilot and/or flight examiner on initial checkout flights, standardization check flights, and instrument check flights for those required to maintain proficiency; perform functional check flights following aircraft maintenance and modifications; provide world-wide, deployed support to Earth Science / Airborne Science missions; provide real-time aircraft support to manned / unmanned space flight missions; and investigate critical flight regimes created by structural modifications to the aircraft to accommodate science new piloting techniques to compensate for abnormal flight characteristics created by structural changes to the aircraft.
You will work directly with the principal investigators, project scientists, flight test engineers and balances derived specific project requirements with aircraft/ UAS operational capabilities and risk analysis. Research and analyze problems, issues, or project requirements. Provide expert analysis and advice on complex program issues and project activities. Collect relevant information from many varied sources, some of which are difficult to access. Devise operational support plans and schedules. Make authoritative recommendations. Plan, oversee, and accomplish special projects. Conceive and implement new initiatives to strengthen, facilitate, and integrate projects. Undertake or participate in special projects, ongoing analysis, investigations and initiatives that have high priority for high level management.
