The Associate Administrator is responsible for regulating the United States’ (U.S.) commercial space transportation industry to ensure compliance with international obligations of the U.S. and to protect the public health and safety, safety of property, and national security and foreign policy interests of the U.S; encourage, facilitate and promote commercial space launches and reentries by the private sector; recommend appropriate changes in Federal statutes, treaties, regulations, policies, plans and procedures; and facilitate the strengthening and expansion of the U.S. space transportation infrastructure.
Specific responsibilities include:
-Represents the Administrator on commercial space transportation and regulatory and policy decisions within the commercial space transportation community, to include the Executive branch of Government, state and local entities and foreign public and private organizations concerned with commercial space transportation regulations and programs and at Congressional committee hearings and sub-committee hearings.
-Serves as a key member of the Government-wide Space Council that determines government departments' roles and responsibilities that have a stake in space, as well as Government policies and rulemaking related to the Nation's space power including national security, commerce, international relations, exploration and science to ensure these aspects are coordinated and aligned.
-Advises the Administrator on matters concerning scope, content, emphasis and direction of regulatory and certification programs, goals and policies as they relate to commercial space transportation, space policy and space research and development.
-Advocates for FAA positions, particularly when legislative changes are required to enable the FAA to pursue stated commercial space transportation and other policy goals.
-Develops and recommends program objectives and operations, allocation of resources, changes in program emphasis, and adjustments in resource utilization to correct resource deficiencies, and provide balanced program operations.
-Assesses the long-term programmatic needs of the commercial space transportation program and provides leadership for the planning and development of policies, programs, and priorities to meet Administration and stakeholder needs.
-Provides Executive leadership and oversight for an organization of approximately 100 Federal employees.
As a basic requirement for entry into the FAA Executive System, you must provide evidence of progressively responsible leadership experience that is indicative of senior executive level management capability; and that is directly related to the skills and abilities outlined under the Leadership and Technical Requirements listed below.
