You will serve as an engineer in Rulemaking’s Office of Crashworthiness Standards, which is responsible for planning, implementing, and maintaining motor vehicle crashworthiness safety standards, policy, and decisions for motor vehicles used on the Nation’s highways. Assignments involve technical engineering programs concerning the analysis of vehicle safety issues, performance evaluation, and the promulgation or upgrade of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), regulations and/or guidelines dealing with crashworthiness characteristics of motor vehicles. There are multiple positions located within the following two divisions:
Light Duty Vehicle Division: This division’s area of responsibility includes frontal crash protection, side impact protection, vehicle compatibility, seat belts, seat belt assemblies, advanced air bags, upper interior head protection, seat back strength, head restraints, ejection mitigation, window glazing, and anthropomorphic test devices. Candidates with education and/or experience working with crashworthiness technologies for light duty vehicles would be particularly suitable to work in this division.
Special Vehicles & Systems Division: This division’s area of responsibility includes child restraint systems, school buses, motorcoaches, motorcycle helmets, pedestrian protection, roof and door component strength, fuel system integrity, fuel container integrity, flammability of materials, electric and other alternative fuel vehicles, and truck underride guards. Candidates with education and/or experience working with safety standard and mechanical engineering analysis and principles would be particularly suitable to work in this division.
The ideal candidate is self-motivated, has demonstrated knowledge and expertise involving vehicle safety, and possesses sound engineering judgement. The ideal candidate has strong analytical, writing and communication skills. The ideal candidate can manage projects and work cooperatively with stakeholders to improve vehicle safety.
