This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectee is guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. The typical season for Steamtown National Historic Site is April to December, but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions. This position will be in non-pay status for 2 payperiods during the first year.
Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

Perform a full range of laborer duties in an assigned area such as sweeps and mops floors using brooms and mops or other heavy powered cleaning equipment. Makes minor repairs (e.g., cleans drains, air filters, tightens screws, bolts and replaces washers). Maintains, adjusts, cleans, and oils machinery and equipment used. Assists in the maintenance of locomotive engines such as oil, grease, check fluids, fuel and clean. Shovels coal, ash, ballast and other materials using a variety of hand tools. Fill tenders and engines with water. Makes note of condition of facilities, and reports to Supervisor those items needing repairs such as damaged equipment, broken tools, damaged electrical outlets, frayed cords, water leaks, and other conditions requiring maintenance. Makes minor repairs (e.g., cleans drains, air filters, tightens screws, bolts and replaces washers).
There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Physical Demands: Heavy physical labor and exertion are involved with this position, carrying and lifting up
to 50 pounds. Work routinely involves considerable standing, bending, kneeling, reaching, crawling, working on and moving ladders and scaffolding and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
Working Conditions: Employee must wear and use necessary safety items and equipment and follow the park safety program. Noise level could be extreme for unprotected ears. Hearing protection is provided.
May work from ladders, platforms, and in places which are hard to reach, requiring employee to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions may be required.
Work is normally performed indoors and occasionally outside, in temperatures ranging from 0 - 100 degrees and humidity up to 90%. You will be exposed to a variety of winter weather conditions, such as high winds and blowing snow, while working outdoors. Position works from ladders or scaffolding. You will be exposed to dust, dirt, wind and rain. You may work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paint solvents, etc. You may be exposed to infectious diseases and electrical shocks. Is schedule to work holidays, weekends. There are varying tours of duty for these positions. You may be required to work other than administrative work hours or shifts (not 8:00am to 4:30pm).
