NTSB: Independently Advancing Transportation Safety
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is an independent U.S. Federal agency responsible for investigating significant accidents in the various modes of transportation-aviation, railroad, highway, marine, and pipeline. The NTSB determines the probable cause of each accident investigated and issues safety recommendations to prevent future accidents.
This position is located in the Office of Research & Engineering. The incumbent serves as a National Resource Specialist in applied human performance factors research and functions as a senior technical expert in the scientific research & analysis of fatigue, impairment, and other applied human performance factors as well as supports the agency's transportation accident investigations, safety research projects, and safety recommendation process.

At the GS-15level, typical duties may include:
-- Conducts research and develops studies and investigations on individual aspects of human performance;
-- Examines human performance accident investigation methods and techniques, and evaluates the effectiveness;
-- Designs complex safety research study designs, collects data, conducts statistical analyses, and prepares study reports, data analysis reports, and other types of analytical products;
-- Serves as the multi-modal expert on fatigue and impairment in transportation;
-- Represents the agency in national and international deliberations focused on applied human performance research topics;
-- Collaborates and builds partnerships with agency leadership and staff; and
-- Represents the agency at technical conferences; presents technical papers communicating agency findings and methodology.
NOTE: Investigative assignments may be given on short notice and may involve work at unusual times for long hours at accident sites, sometimes in remote, rugged and hostile settings. The incumbent must be able to work in physically demanding and adverse conditions such as in swamps and deserts, on steep, uneven and mountainous terrain. The incumbent will be responsible for the effective, economical, and efficient utilization of all resources committed to the investigation. The incumbent must qualify for and maintain a government issued travel charge card.
