    The Board of Veterans' Appeals (Board/BVA) is the component of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that is responsible for entering the final decision on behalf of the Secretary in each of the many thousands of claims for entitlement to Veterans' Benefits that are presented annually for the appellate review. The incumbent functions as a team player for implementing the VA strategic goal of "providing one VA world class service to Veterans and their families through the effective management of people, technology and processes."The incumbent is a member of an organization that strives for quality, timeliness and consistency.

    Responsibilities

    The Staff Assistant administratively supports and assists the Deputy Vice Chairman (DVC) within the Office of Appellate (OAO). The DVC depends on the Staff Assistant to manage programs, business processes, create reports, and exercises independent judgment and discretion in selecting and applying established work methods and procedures. The staff assistant serves as the focal point in the overall management of the office and keeps the DVC informed of management related matters and provides advice on the same.

    The Staff Assistant analyzes, develops criteria for and evaluates policies and procedures affecting organizational program objectives. The Staff Assistant conducts major studies involving issues brought to the attention of the DVCs. These issues may involve policies or programs of a complex nature that may cut across organizational lines within the Board or may involve relationships between Central Office and Field facilities. The Staff Assistant serves as the DVCs' central point for all, appeals procedures, and current initiatives.
