The Division of Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation (CMMI) in the Engineering Directorate announces a nationwide search to fill a Program Director position to take the lead for CMMI in its partnership in three groundbreaking, cross-directorate initiatives.
Program Directors have an unparalleled opportunity and responsibility to ensure that NSF-funded research is at the forefront of advancing fundamental knowledge. In support of this, Program Directors are responsible for extensive interaction with academic research communities and industry, as well as interaction with other Federal agencies that may lead to the development of interagency collaborations. Within this context, Program Directors solicit, receive and review research and education proposals, make funding recommendations, administer awards, and undertake interaction with research communities in these fields. They are also responsible for service to Foundation-wide activities and initiatives that together accomplish NSF’s strategic goals to: (1) transform the frontiers of science and engineering, (2) stimulate innovation and address societal needs through research and education, and (3) excel as a federal science agency. The position requires a commitment to high standards of intellectualism and ethical conduct, a considerable breadth of interest, receptivity to new ideas, a strong sense of fairness, good judgment, and a high degree of personal integrity.

The Division of Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation (CMMI) in the Engineering Directorate is a full partner in a number of transformational, cross-directorate initiatives with important societal implications. This position requires a program director with appropriate technical depth, an ability to work across disciplines, and an understanding of the essential role of the social sciences, to take the lead for CMMI’s participation in the following three initiatives. (1) The Future of Work at the Human-Technology initiative supports convergent research that responds to the challenges and opportunities of the changing landscape of the human-technology partnership and the emerging socio-technological landscape. (2) The National Robotics Initiative solicitation supports research to accelerate the development and use of collaborative robots that work beside, or cooperatively with, people. (3) The Continuum, Compliant, and Configurable Soft Robotics Engineering component of the Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation solicitation supports research required to develop robots with highly compliant materials or components.
