    This announcement will be used to fill multiple vacancies in the Mental Health Department at the VHA Washington, DC VA Medical Center (VAMC) as a Certified Nursing Assistant

    Work Schedule: 8 and 12 hour shifts; may rotate through all shifts; weekends and holidays required

    Responsibilities

    These positions are located within Nursing Service at the Washington, DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The Nursing Assistant performs complex nursing care procedures according to established procedures. She/he will carry a direct patient assignment for a group of patients and assist others with completion of the workload of the assigned area. Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Bathes, shaves, gives oral hygiene, shampoos hair, provides nail care, and active range of motion activity
    • Positions, holds, turns, ambulates, and transfers patients as indicated
    • Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment by keeping assigned area in an orderly and sanitary condition
    • Collects and labels specimens of sputum, urine (routine and sterile), feces, and assists with the collection of other sterile specimens, as directed by the team leader for storage and/or delivery to the laboratory
    • Measures and records vital signs, height and weight, intake and output
    • Assists members of health care team by obtaining necessary supplies and equipment
    • Observes, reports, and records changes in patient's physical or emotional status, i.e. signs and symptoms that may require interventions or treatment, e.g., respiratory distress, cyanosis, aspiration, infiltration of IV fluids, blood transfusion reaction, unusual behavior, non-verbal signs of pain, stress, or withdrawal
    • Helps instruct or interpret instructions to patients or family to obtain cooperation in treatments
    • Performs cleansing of wounds, changes sterile dressings on complex wounds that require chemical debridement or deep packing
    • Performs oral, nasopharyngeal or tracheostomy suctioning
    • Teaches by example demonstrating to other personnel and patients proper techniques and treatment principles in performing basic Nursing Service procedures
    • Operates and monitors commonly used electrocardiographic equipment including 12-lead electrocardiogram and accessories
    • Performs clerical and receptionist duties as needed that include but are not limited to: assisting patients with administrative admission and discharge procedures, assembling patient medical records and answering the telephone; and
    • Performs all other duties as assigned
