This is a student work opportunity during the academic school year and not just a summer opportunity. Selected candidates could begin working during the summer as long as they are enrolled in a qualifying program for the Fall 2018. Candidates must provide documentation from the educational institution stating enrollment for Fall 2018.
The mission of the Tax Division is to enforce the nation's tax laws fully, fairly, and consistently, through both criminal and civil litigation, in order to promote voluntary compliance with the tax laws, maintain public confidence in the integrity of the tax system, and promote the sound development of the law. The Tax Division employs more than 350 attorneys in fourteen civil, criminal, and appellate sections.
These positions will be filled under the Department of Justice Pathways Internship Program (Tax Division). The Pathways Program is designed to provide students currently enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from undergraduate to graduate level, with opportunities to work and get paid while exploring federal careers. Students appointed may work full-time or part-time (as their class schedule allows) while school is in session, and full-time (depending upon the needs of the agency) when students are on a vacation period or whenever the school is officially closed. The candidates selected to fill these positions will be required to complete a Participant Agreement defining the requirements of the program, including the anticipated date for completing educational requirements. United States Citizens/ Individuals accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled).
Pathways Interns will serve as Student Trainees (Administrative Support (OA)), working with attorneys and administrative professionals and assisting with a variety of administrative and clerical duties. These duties may include creating and maintaining electronic and paper files, answering phones, receiving visitors, assembling materials for litigation purposes, assisting with incoming and outgoing mail and copying or scanning documents.
The positions are located within the Tax Division. Pathways Interns may be placed in any of the following offices within the Tax Division: Office of the Assistant Attorney General, Civil Trial Sections, Court of Federal Claims, Appellate Section, Office of Review, Criminal Enforcement Sections, Criminal Appeals and Tax Enforcement Policy Section, Office of Management and Administration and Office of Training. Interns may work full-time or part-time schedules at the discretion of the employer.
Tour of duty will be established so that it does not interfere with the academic schedule during the school year.
Interns on a temporary (NTE) appointment earn sick leave. When such an appointment is less than 90 days, the Intern is entitled to accrue annual leave only after being currently employed for a continuous period of 90 days under successive appointments without a break in service. After completing the 90-day period of continuous employment, the Intern is entitled to be credited with the leave that would have accrued to him or her during that period.
Interns on a temporary (NTE) appointment of at least one year may be eligible, depending on work schedule, to enroll in the Federal Health Benefits Program (FEHBP), the Federal supplemental dental and vision program (FEDVIP), and federal life insurance program (FEGLI).
Interns are also eligible for transit benefits.
