An Associate Director within the Research & Innovation Center (R&IC), directly supports the Executive Director of R&IC in assuring the, safe, effective and fiscally responsible conduct of National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) research operations in the area of responsibility. This includes planning and managing intramural research activities at NETL' s three research campuses consistent with the direction and guidance provided by NETL's senior leadership team. These research & development (R&D) activities, which focus primarily on early-stage technology discovery and development, are performed by federal employees, in collaboration with on-site contractors, research associates affiliated with a number of universities, and scientists and engineers from other research organizations and the private sector.
The incumbent works with the Deputy Director and the Executive Director of R&IC to assure that a world-class geological and environmental sciences competency (to include research expertise and facilities) is nurtured and sustained. Through effective leverage of this core technical competency, in collaboration with a variety of research partners, R&IC staff are able to conduct long range exploratory research; develop enabling science for current and emerging energy technologies; initiate and develop new R&D concepts and approaches; support program, product, and new business development; and provide NETL and the larger DOE organization with unbiased, expert technical evaluations of emerging science and technologies germane to sustainable energy systems.

Physical Scientist - Series 1301
A. Bachelor’s degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
B. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
