FE plays a key role in helping the United States meet its need for secure, reasonably priced, and environmentally sound fossil energy supplies. FE’s primary mission is to ensure the nation can continue to rely on traditional resources for clean, secure and affordable energy while enhancing environmental protection. Its headquarters offices are in downtown Washington, DC, and Germantown, Maryland. The organization also includes the National Energy Technology Laboratory with offices in Morgantown, W. Va., Pittsburgh, Pa., Sugar Land, Texas, Albany, Ore., Houston, Texas and Anchorage, Alaska; and the Strategic Petroleum Reserve based in New Orleans, La.

The incumbent serves as the Director, National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) and is responsible for the management and administration of NETL in its mission to conduct and implement a research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) program that assures the availability of clean, affordable, and reliable domestic energy. The Director manages, guides, and provides oversight for all functions and authorities delegated to NETL for its programs, administration, legal, and procurement activities.
The Director is a key member of the Department of Energy (DOE) and Fossil Energy (FE) senior leadership team. The incumbent provides major policy input for program development to Fossil Energy and Deputy Assistant Secretaries, develops execution strategies for Fossil Energy's RD&D and, as applicable, programs for the development of other energy and environmental technologies.
