The mission of the Defender program is to ensure that the right to counsel guaranteed by the Sixth Amendment, the Criminal Justice Act (CJA), and other statutory mandates are enforced on behalf of those who cannot afford to retain counsel. The incumbent will serve as an IT Specialist and will report to the Chief of the Administrative Operations Staff (AOS) in the Defender Services Office.
The Defender Services Office (DSO) is responsible for national administration of the U.S. Federal Defender and Appointed Counsel Program. Responsibilities of this office include support of the Defender Services Committee of the Judicial Conference, defining appropriation and individual federal defender organization budget requirements, providing training throughout the country, and assessing individual district CJA programs.
The responsibilities of the AOS encompass all administrative and operational activities that are needed to support the DSO. They range from internal budget formulation and execution to supporting the technical and audio visual needs of national training programs.
Applicants should be knowledgeable about how to operate various pieces of audio visual equipment and understand the support needs associated with planning and executing national training programs. They should possess a high proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and the ability to use database software is critical. Strong verbal communication skills are important as responsibilities are likely to include interacting with staff both inside and outside of the DSO.
The applicant should be self-motivated, and be comfortable working in a team environment that is often fast paced to meet tight deadlines.
