Training Requirement: This position requires that you complete or have completed the eight week basic criminal investigator course at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, GA. Retention in the position is subject to successful completion of the training.
Firearm Requirement: This position requires you to be authorized to carry a firearm and maintain firearm proficiency. Therefore, it is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment, 18 U.S.C. Section 922(g)(9) and you will be required to verify that you have not been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.
Medical Requirement: This position requires you to maintain physical fitness standards set by the agency. Physical stamina, excellent eyesight and hearing, and emotional stability are essential. The duties of positions in the criminal investigator series require moderate to arduous physical exertion involving walking and standing, use of firearms, and exposure to inclement weather.
Background Investigation, Credit Check & Security Clearance Requirement: This is a special-sensitive position and a Top Secret/SCI clearance is required. Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. A credit check will be conducted. Failure to successfully meet these requirements may be grounds for appropriate personnel action. If hired, a background security reinvestigation or supplemental investigation may be required at a later time.
Federal Law Enforcement Retirement: This position is covered by the special retirement provision for Federal Law Enforcement Officers (FLEO). Candidates without previous FLEO service must be under age 37. Those with current or prior FLEO coverage will be considered only if they can demonstrate that they will have completed 20 years of covered service by the mandatory retirement age of 57. If you have current or prior FLEO coverage, you must submit appropriate documentation (prior SF-50s) that show period of coverage. This position is approved for Secondary Law Enforcement coverage under 5 U.S.C. 8331(20) or 5 U.S.C. 8401(17). Also included is an employee occupying a supervisory administrative position and meets the conditions of 84.803(b). Previous experience in a primary (rigorous) law enforcement position or equivalent outside of the Federal Government is a prerequisite. Coverage only extended in this position immediately follows service in a law enforcement position. FERS applicants for this position must have completed 3 years of service in a primary position in order to continue coverage upon selection.
Probationary Period: Persons newly selected for career appointment to the SES must have their ECQs approved by the OPM Qualifications Review Board and will be required to serve a one-year probationary period.
