This position is located in the Department of Labor, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Administration and Management (OASAM), Security Center. The security program has a profound and possible political effect upon all ongoing programs of DOL and could have deleterious effect upon DOL programs if protection of personnel, resources, facilities and information are not accomplished in a timely manner with DOL interests at the forefront. The Security Center is also responsible for all personnel security functions and the staff are responsible for all personnel security policy and operations for the Department and its subordinate agencies, including security clearance determinations for employees or other persons for access to sensitive information, resources, material, or work sites.
The full performance level of this position is GS-11. However, you will be required to compete for future promotions. Future promotions are dependent on your ability to perform the duties at a higher level, the continuing need for an employee assigned to the higher level, and supervisory approval.

Assists senior specialist in conducting information, physical, and personnel investigations and/or projects.

Initiates requests for low risk, public trust, and national security investigations, conducting a thorough review to ensure a complete and accurate request is released to OPM.
Identifies problems; recommends corrective actions; and provides assistance on procedural issues.
At the GS-9 level - Reviews, evaluates and adjudicates reports of investigations with no issues, personnel files, and other records to determine suitability/fitness for employment on Low Risk positions.
Initiates requests for low risk, public trust, and national security investigations, conducting a thorough review to ensure a complete and accurate request is released to the Office of Personnel Management.
Provides information to the Department of Labor employees by advising on personnel security polices; formulating and recommending personnel security investigative requirements; and advising on procedures for adverse determinations and employee rights.
Ensures the security of records related to personnel security. Monitors and maintains data and the use of such data in oversight review for overall successful program management. Establishes and maintains a tickler system to ensure reinvestigations are initiated in a timely manner.
At the GS-11 Level- Provides authoritative information and assistance to officials within the organization and serviced activities by advising on personnel security policies and related matters and the impact of personnel security requirements on organizational missions.
Evaluates and advises on the sensitivity determination for each position as described by management based on need-to-know principles.
Makes initial determination as to scope of investigation required, considering such factors as sensitivity level of position, background information on individual, criteria for governing various classes of security clearances, etc.
Performs preliminary investigations by making a local check of civilian records and makes an initial determination of individual's suitability, trustworthiness or reliability, to include analysis of credible derogatory information.
Coordinates with Office of Personnel Management (OPM), other entities to obtain completed investigations.
Conducts screening interviews of personnel submitting Single Scope Background Investigations to evaluate suitability for access to special compartmented information.
Coordinates with affected activity when an individual clearance has been suspended, denied, or revoked.
