    This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), National Arboretum Gardens Unit located in Washington, DC. Established by an Act of Congress in 1927, the USNA is a collections-based research facility and public garden administered through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), whose mission is to enhance the economic, environmental, and aesthetic value of ornamental and landscape plants through long-term, multi-disciplinary research, conservation of genetic resources, and interpretative gardens and exhibits.

    The primary purpose of this position is to perform maintenance, enhancement, development, improvement, and expansion duties associated with the internationally recognized collections and gardens of the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum.

    Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

    • Maintains and refines plant collections and gardens displayed in a museum.
    • Evaluates the health and aesthetic value of bonsai and penjing specimens and recommends actions to improve the health of the specimens.
    • Prevents and controls insect and disease problems by ensuring proper pest management.
    • Contributes to the museum's educational activities including classes, tours, or workshops by providing interpretation of the collections.
    • Provides technical advice to the staff and volunteers assigned to maintain the collections to ensure they are working to the best overall advantage of the museum.
