This position is located on the Deputy Regional Forester State & Private Forestry, Cooperative Forestry Unit, National Tree Seed Laboratory.
The incumbent serves as Director of the National Tree Seed Laboratory and is an expert consultant on tree seed technology for forest regeneration programs throughout the United States. This position provides professional direction in the planning, budgeting, and direction of a wide area of forest tree seed programs. These programs include technical assistance to state forestry agencies, federal agencies, and large and small industrial forest companies in the area of tree seed collection, conditioning, testing and storage.

Devises and recommends effective seed technology strategies to achieve outputs within boundaries of scientific and legislated forest regeneration principles.
Analyzes research efforts and designs strategy for their effective implementation and incorporation into the seed and nursery management program.
Advises state, federal, and private managers and technicians on the entire range of tree seed technology, including seed collection, conditioning, storage and use.
Visits seed orchards, seed conditioning plants, and nurseries to observe operations and review conditions.
Prepares informational and advisory technical reports and lay journal articles on the latest technical improvements and conducts administrative and pilot studies in seed harvesting, seed conditioning, and seed management.
Assists and trains State forestry staffs, forestry consultants, and other professionals in understanding and implementing new technology in the broad field of seed technology.

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements.
Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in forestry; or a related subject-matter field that included a total of at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours of course work were in forestry. The curriculum must have been sufficiently diversified to include courses in each of the following areas:
OR Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in forestry, or at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours were in forestry. The requirements for diversification of the 24 semester hours in forestry are the same as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to the requirements described above, the following additional specialized experience is required for the grade(s) specified.
For the GS-13 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level. Examples of specialized experience are: Advanced skills applying theories, principles, standards and methods in a native plant seed specialty area or program. Skills performing one or more of the following: chemical and X-ray seed testing protocols; seed testing protocols for conifer OR hardwood seed; seed testing protocols for BOTH conifer and hardwood seed; testing native botanical (non-tree) seed; or preparing seed for long-term storage, e.g. freezer and/or cryopreservation. Managed a seed lab at a county, state or regional level, and was responsible for the researching, developing, implementing and managing of both current and new plant seed testing methodologies.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
