Because of the sensitive nature of these positions, those selected must undergo an extensive background investigation process before starting work. Estimated earliest time for completion of the investigation ranges from 3-6 months.

Required to work closely with supervisory staff and the law enforcement Park Rangers assigned to the Gateway Arch in the accepted procedures for performing closure security checks, emergency response, and security incidents, any illness/accidents, or reporting violations of park rules and safety requirements. Responsible for the supervisory functions of subordinate security guards to include: hiring, training, directing, supervising, disciplining, and evaluating. Responsible for scheduling the Security Guards assigned to the Arch ensuring sufficient coverage of security checkpoints. Responsible for the revisions to guard operations at the Arch, as well as providing updates to the park Physical Security Plan for guard operations. Responsible for conducting daily sensitivity checks as well as maintenance on magnetometers and x-ray equipment. Identifies malfunctions and damage for security equipment and immediately reports any problems to the manufacturer. Maintains records, logs, or checklist and periodically writes supplemental case incident reports. Works at a fixed post area and seeks compliance of pertinent administrative rules and regulations governing facility access and physical security. Provide security services to the Gateway Arch Complex by monitoring and screening visitors with the use of walk-through magnetometers or hand-held scanners and scanning their personal belongings with radiographic (x-ray) equipment. Detects and identifies possibly harmful or illegal items. Process lost or abandoned property at the security checkpoints in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures. Ensures facilities are secured at the close of business. May request medical assistance or perform Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to assist victims of illness or accidents. Provides the park rules and polices relating to the protection and use of park resources and other information to visitors, often on a one-on-one basis, to add enjoyment to their visit and ensure the protection of park resources.

Physical Demands: Long periods of standing or sitting in limited space for 8 hours or more. Must also be able to lift 30 pounds continuously and 50 pounds occasionally. Must have correctable vision and the ability to distinguish between colors to operate screening software.
Work Environment: Works closely with others and in constant noise during days of heavy visitation. Work fluctuates between indoors within a climate controlled facility and outdoors performing package pre-screening functions on the Arch entrance ramp, roving patrols of grounds or stand in a fixed post. High stress environment due to hours and sheer volume of visitors with unknown potential risks associated with security screening operations. Operation of x-ray equipment exposes to a level of risk to radiation exposure therefore all safety procedures and other precautions are mandatory.
