The incumbent serves as a Medical Officer in the Office of Aerospace Medicine’s Medical Appeals Branch and Medical Specialties Division. The incumbent's primary responsibility is to provide expert support for various medical programs within the branch. The incumbent provides professional advice and technical knowledge to the Medical Appeals Branch Manager, Medical Specialties Division Manager, AAM senior management, and other agency elements with respect to airman medical certification and the Air Traffic Control Specialist Health Program. Incumbent will assist in executing the Aerospace Medical Program. The incumbent will participate in the preparation, review, and disposition of complex medical cases that have been appealed to the Federal Air Surgeon, to include detailed review of related current evidence-based medical literature and working with the Federal Air Surgeon specialty consultants.
ALL APPLICANTS MUST POSSESS AND PROVIDE DOCUMENTATION OF THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS: Degree: Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicant's graduation. [A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) (or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country).] Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in an institution accredited for such training. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Listings of accredited programs are published yearly in the Directory of Residency Training Programs and the Yearbook and Directory of Osteopathic Physicians. Licensure: For positions involving patient care, candidates must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Aviation Medical Programs: In addition to a residency in aerospace medicine, knowledge, skills, and abilities for work in this program area may have been acquired in fields such as internal medicine, pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease, family practice, preventive medicine, occupational health, or public health. To qualify for this position, applicants must have one year of work experience equivalent to the FV-L or GS/FG-15 level (in the Federal service) in aviation/aerospace medicine and in the performance of medical review, analysis and interpretation of standards and clearance of safety related employees.
