These positions are Full-Time full-time temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours (about 6 months) in a service year. Positions may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement may be eligible for rehire in subsequent service years provided the employee does not exceed 1039 hours of work in their service year.
The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Great Smoky Mountains National Park is March-October, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding.
Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

The Museum Technician will work on a multi-park project preparing to move collections from Andrew Johnson National Historic Site and Cumberland Gap National Historic Park to the Collections Preservation Center at Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Selectees will unpack, inventory and rehouse collections at the Collections Preservation Center in Townsend, TN. At Cumberland Gap NHP and Andrew Johnson NHS the selectees will identify, inventory, and pack collections for shipping and delivery to the facility at Townsend, TN. All selectees will assist with final delivery and storage at the Collections Preservation Center. All selectees will assist or conduct routine collections management tasks. These duties may include Integrated Pest Management, environmental monitoring, and conducting the annual museum property inventory.
Area Location:
Townsend, TN is an incorporated city of nearly 500 residents. It is located in Blount county and is 25 miles way from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Headquarters. It serves as a gateway to the Cades Cove area of the park. Townsend offers community facilities such as an elementary school, public library, restaurants, shopping, fuel, and hardware. The nearest town is Maryville, 17 miles away. Maryville offers community amenities including medical and dental facilities, shopping, and Maryville College.
Andrew Johnson NHS is located in east Tennessee in the town of Greeneville, and is off Interstate 81 south of Bristol. 45 minutes away is the Tri-Cities Regional Airport TN/VA and only 74 miles from the McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville, TN. The park is about 17 acres in size and includes President Andrew Johnson's Homestead, Early Home, Visitor Center, and the cemetery where the President and members of his family are buried. The cemetery is also an open/active cemetery for veterans of our armed forces.
Cumberland Gap NHP is located in Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. Park Headquarters is located in Middlesboro, KY. Middlesboro, with a population of nearly 12,000, includes facilities such as medical, dental, and shopping centers. Elementary schools are located in Middlesboro, KY; Harrogate, TN and Ewing, VA. Southeast Tech Community College is located in Middlesboro, about 3 miles from the Park. Lincoln Memorial University, located in Harrogate, is about 2 miles south of the Park. Summers are warm and humid with temperatures in the 90's; winters are normally cool with low's occasionally 15 degrees.

Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy items (e.g., boxes and collection items up to 50 pounds) must be lifted or moved on a frequent basis.
Working Conditions: Most of the work is performed in a museum environment of exhibit and storage areas, workroom/laboratory, and offices. Occasional work with materials which are duty or stored with protective chemicals may require the use of dust masks, gloves, or other protective devices. The incumbent may occasionally perform field work in adverse weather conditions.
