J- 8, Forces Division is the Joint Staff lead for the Department of Defense (DoD) Global Force Management Data Initiative (GFM DI). The goal of GFM DI is to make force management data visible, accessible, understandable, and trusted in a net-centric environment. GFM DI must support overall Global Force Management (GFM) processes to enable insight into global availability of U.S. forces, and provide a means to assess risks associated with proposed allocation, assignment, and apportionment solutions. This effort is intended to improve risk management across current worldwide operations, warfighting capabilities, and future force capability needs. Ultimately, GFM DI will enable the linking of force structure to GFM, planning, programming, readiness, and personnel systems at each level to transform Joint Force Management throughout the Department.
The J-8 Directorate is charged with providing support to CJCS for evaluating and developing force structure requirements. J-8 conducts joint, bilateral, and multilateral war games and interagency politico-military seminars and simulations. It develops, maintains, and improves the models, techniques, and capabilities used by the Joint Staff and combatant commands to conduct studies and analyses for CJCS.
