This is a term, mixed-tour, Lead Biological Science Technician for the Aquatic Ecosystems Program within the Division of Resources Management and Science in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks (SEKI), California. This position serves as the lead technician on a one to four year project to restore high elevation aquatic ecosystems in which native species have been adversely affected by non-native species.
The Lead Biological Science Technician primarily assists the SEKI Aquatic Ecologist with implementation and management of aquatic ecosystems projects, including but not limited to restoration of endangered mountain yellow-legged frogs and high elevation aquatic ecosystems, monitoring of lakes, streams, amphibians, fish, and other aquatic biota, and facilitating scientific research of aquatic ecosystems. The incumbent will assist the Aquatic Ecologist with 1) recruiting personnel for field crews, 2) managing logistics in preparation for fieldwork, 3) providing supervision, orientation, training and mentoring for field crews, 4) overseeing field operations, 5) managing aquatic datasets, and 6) providing logistic and field support to the parks' Inventory and Monitoring Program and to scientific research studies being conducted in SEKI. Other duties include conducting electronic entry, quality assurance/quality control and summary reporting of field data, and organizing and maintaining field equipment and supplies. Work will occur throughout SEKI, and will entail cooperation with other agencies, organizations, and cooperators. The incumbent will be supervised by the Aquatic Ecologist, will supervise temporary staff and function as crew leader for field crews, and will occasionally work with other division staff. The position will require extensive wilderness travel within SEKI, and occasional travel to meetings and/or trainings. Possession of a valid driver's license is required.
Due to the nature of the duties for this position, the employee must have the physical capacity to hike and conduct field work in remote, high elevation wilderness locations in order to implement field operations. Carrying heavy backpacks and other equipment is required. The employee must be comfortable working in and around ponds, lakes, rivers, and streams, and thus should be a confident swimmer.
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
Physical Demands: The work is divided among the field, laboratory, and office. The office portion of the job is usually sedentary and involves the usual amount of sitting, walking, standing, and bending associated with office and work, informal meetings, and use of office equipment such as computers and copying machines.
The field portion of the job includes driving, hiking, carrying equipment, and camping. Incumbent carries a heavy backpack (up to 50 lbs) and hikes over rough, uneven, rocky terrain or slippery surfaces at elevations from 1,000 ft to over 10,000 ft and in temperatures from 20F to 110F. Field work requires field trips to diverse areas of the park, including hiking up to 20 miles per day at elevations up to 14,000 feet, and driving to sites up to 375 miles from park headquarters. Field work involves extended periods outside at high elevations (over 10,000 feet) under a wide variety of conditions, including rain, hail, snow, cold, and extreme heat. Weeks at a time will be spent in remote wilderness locations camping in tents, and hiking on- and off-trail in rugged, mountainous, uneven terrain. Fieldwork requires long recurring periods of sitting, crouching, or kneeling while repairing gill nets; sitting in float tubes in cold mountain lakes while gill-netting; and wading in streams while backpack electrofishing. Control of nonnative fish in select restoration areas may involve storage, transportation and application of piscicides.
Working Conditions: Office and lab work is performed in an adequately lighted and climate controlled office. Field work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks and discomforts. Field work includes exposure to extreme weather conditions (below freezing to over 100 degrees F), steep and uneven terrain, pesticides, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals. Work sites may occur at various points along a steep elevation gradient, in a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters at low elevations and mild summers and frigid winters at high elevations. High elevations may receive snow storms in the middle of summer. Risks include smoke inhalation, steep slopes, rocky terrain, snow and ice, rivers and lakes, extreme cold or heat, and forests.
Air Quality: Poor air quality afflicts Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, especially during summer months - generally May to October. High ozone levels may be the most harmful pollutant here. In summer months, concentrations often exceed the federal ozone health standards. For more information: http://www.nps.gov/seki/learn/nature/airqualityinfo.htm.
