    Responsibilities

    U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is a component within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security comprised of approximately 19,000 Federal employees and contractors working in approximately 250 Headquarters and field offices around the world. We are responsible for the administration of immigration and naturalization adjudication functions and establishing immigration services policies and priorities.

    Our functions include:

    • Adjudication of immigrant and nonimmigrant visa petitions
    • Adjudication of naturalization applications
    • Adjudication of asylum and refugee applications
    • Adjudication of a variety of other immigration applications and petitions
    The Deputy Director evaluates whether agency programs and administrative support are appropriately prioritized and executes the Director's agenda for agency-wide strategic short- and long-range operational planning and daily activities. Develops and often independently implements personally and through other senior agency leaders, strategies to improve agency operations and accomplish any special projects as required.

    Participates with the Director, in managing and leads a staff of administrative, technical, and professional employees. Develops and recommends to the Director for approval annual operating plans and budget submissions that are consistent with the Director's strategic guidance.

    Occasionally acts on behalf of the Director and represents USCIS before domestic and international entities to facilitate appropriate exchange of information; work on special initiatives; and develop long- and short-range strategies to help the agency achieve its mission. Monitors daily short- and long-term progress on the implementation and execution of the Director's strategic priorities in the agency's operations, reporting regularly to the Director on a timely basis with candid feedback and counsel.
