Physicians appointed to the Medical Staff of the Portland VA Health Care System and assigned to the Division of Hospital and Specialty Medicine will function as independent licensed practitioners.
The specialist in palliative medicine serves as a consultant to other physicians for patients with life-limiting or serious advanced illnesses in an outpatient and/or hospital setting. The palliative medicine specialist is expert in history taking, physical examination, test interpretation, patient counseling, communication skills/advance care planning and differential diagnosis and medical therapeutics. The palliative medicine specialist evaluates and manages adults who have single or multiple disorders in all of the subspecialties in the broad field of medicine and specifically palliative medicine. The practice of palliative medicine is not delimited by the location in which a patient is seen and occurs in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
VA palliative medicine specialists receive an academic appointment commensurate with qualification at Oregon Health & Sciences University (OHSU). OHSU clinical privileging requires the provider successfully pass the board certification examination and maintain board certification in areas of clinical practice. The incumbent may participate in exchange of clinical services within the Division of Geriatrics and departments at OHSU as defined in a Memorandum of Understanding between the VA and OHSU. This exchange of clinical care is considered to be part of your VA position and will be conducted in additional to the VA tour of duty requirements.
A "clinician-educator" will spend the majority of his/her time in direct patient care or in the supervision of fellows, housestaff and students in both the inpatient or outpatient settings.
Appropriately qualified candidates may also serve in a leadership role within Palliative Medicine, including program development and other related tasks.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, Day Tour Plus On Call Hours Nights and Weekends

As assigned by the section chief, clinical duties for this position may include:
1. Outpatient clinics related to Palliative Care
2. Residents and fellows supervision and training in both inpatient and outpatient clinical settings
3. Inpatient palliative medicine consult service attending
4. Creation and management of templates and order sets to facilitate non-face to
face care (tele-health, e-consultation) consults.
5. Completion of palliative medicine E-consults, face to face, and telehealth consults.
6. Indirect patient care: returning telephone calls, responding to patient emails, reviewing and renewing prescriptions, reviewing laboratory and imaging data, communicating results to patients, and implementing improved quality in systems delivery.
